The 1976 Tehran UFO: When the Jet's Instruments Failed

Key — In 1976, Iranian Air Force F-4 Phantoms approached a glowing object over Tehran — and their instruments and weapons failed. Documented in a U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency cable, here is the evidence.
As the jet closed in, its weapons and communications died at the same instant. The pilot could not even press the fire button. And all of it survives in an official U.S. military document.

What happened in the skies over Tehran in the early hours of September 19, 1976, remains one of the best-documented UFO cases on record. Multiple civilians reported a bright object hovering overhead, the Iranian Air Force scrambled real fighter jets, and — crucially — the event was preserved in detail in a cable from the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency, making it verifiable.

An F-4 Phantom fighter jet taking off at night

A bright light over Tehran

Around 12:30 a.m., calls from Tehran residents multiplied. They described an object far brighter than a star, flashing red, green and orange. At first the control tower suspected a misidentified star, but as the reports kept coming, an F-4 Phantom was scrambled from an air base near Shahrokhi.

When the jet had closed to roughly 25 miles, its instruments and communications suddenly went dead. The moment the pilot turned away from the object, the equipment came back to life as if nothing had happened.

A second Phantom — and a smaller object

With the first jet forced to return, a second F-4 launched, flown by Lieutenant Parviz Jafari. Again, approaching the object produced the same effect. As Jafari tried to arm his weapons and fire a missile, at that exact instant his instrument panel and weapons controls both failed, he later testified.

Stranger still was what happened next: a smaller luminous object detached from the larger one and shot toward the fighter. Jafari performed an evasive maneuver, and the smaller object reportedly rejoined the larger craft.

Preserved in the record

What sets this case apart from countless sightings is the clear official record. Based on the Iranian Air Force report, the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency drafted a cable that was later declassified under the Freedom of Information Act, describing the event in unusual detail — radar contact, instrument failures, and multiple witnesses among them.

So what was it?

The honest answer is that the object was never identified. Skeptical analysts point to a misidentified bright planet (Jupiter), meteors, electromagnetic interference, or unknown Cold War-era technology. Pilots and some researchers counter that the instrument failures and the object's maneuvers are hard to explain that way.

What matters is that neither view is settled. 'Unidentified' does not mean alien. But this case stands as a landmark example of a UFO sighting treated not as rumor, but as the subject of an official military document.
